Decorative Tree Pit Surfacing

product image :: decorative surfacing - treepit surfacingDurable, open textured, permeable natural stone and resin paving.

The typical life of a newly planted tree can be just 5 to 7 years and is often much less. Air and water must reach a tree's roots to allow it to survive and to thrive.

Optus tree pit surfacing is a liquid applied bonded stone that forms a solid but flexible surround at the base of a tree but which also lets water and air to pass through to the tree's roots. Clear polyurethane resins which are resistant to the sun's rays bond natural stone aggregate together to form an attractive stable surfacing.

As well as sustaining the tree this solution enhances any hard landscaping in the area of the tree or provides a contrast when trees are located in areas such as car parks.

The Optus tree pit system also benefits from the effects that can be achieved using the wide range of natural stone available on the market. This can be complemented by the use of recycled crushed glass which is available in more vibrant colours.

Versatile Solution

product image :: decorative surfacing - treepit matrixTree pits with settled and cracked gratings are an eyesore which is not always easy to remedy. The object is always to allow water and air to reach the roots whilst protecting the tree and avoiding damage to the bark. The area around a tree is often found clogged with general rubbish and weeds as a result of settlement or failure of the grating. The area needs to be reinstated and levelled out, providing sufficient permeability whilst supporting occasional loads from cars without excessive settlement.

The Optus system does all of that by applying a trowelled mix of stone and resin around the tree to blend in with existing levels and any landscaping requirements.

Benefits

  • attractive, decorative appearance
  • light stable
  • easy to mix and lay
  • flexible – to accommodate movement
  • durable
  • permeable to air and water
  • resistant to oil
  • no loose stones - vandal proof
  • uses natural stone that will not discolour
  • can be continued over adjacent hard surfaces
  • fast curing - minimal disruption

Application

  • the tree pit is prepared and levelled over a compacted stone base
  • resin and hardener is mixed together
  • the mix is poured over the stone in an ordinary drum or paddle mixer
  • after mixing the material is poured onto the tree pit and trowelled into place
  • tree collars can be placed around the trunk to allow for growth and a geotextile laid over the tree soil for stability (contact us for details)
  • for a heavier duty solution the surfacing can be placed in a plastic geogrid/matrix paver
  • for additional anti-slip properties the final surface can be sprinkled with dry sand

(For new construction refer to design guidelines for thickness of paving and road base.)
